1840s: John Platts hanged
John Platts was hanged on April 1, 1847, for the murder of George Collis in Chesterfield. The public execution in front of Derby County Gaol was watched by 20,000 people. The motive for the crime, which took place in February of that year, was theft. Platts (22), who was a butcher by trade, stabbed his victim, before mutilating his body, stealing his shoes and purse and rifling through his pockets.
Also on the list are Brandreth, Ludlam and Turner, who were hanged at Derby Gaol on November 7, 1817, for high treason. Read about their crime here.
