1932 souvenir booklet was sold to help flood victims
In May, 1932, Derby saw some of the worst floods in history until recent times.
A publication was produced and distributed by the YMCA and featured Derby Daily Telegraph and Derby Illustrated News photographs. It was sold for 6d (2.5p) in aid of the Mayor’s Flood Fund to help victims.
The picture (right) shows shopkeepers trying to salvage some of their stock in St James’ Street.
Many worked day after day to get their businesses cleaned up and operational again. The photograph (left) is of aghast members of St Werburgh’s congregation looking at the damage caused to the church’s wooden flooring by the flood waters.
Mr Renshaw, of Spondon, picked up the souvenir booklet at a car boot sale. He said: “I doubt if there are many of these booklets left today. The pictures are fascinating. It must have been a good way of raising money for those affected.”
