Images of a Decade

This is the decade that has been labeled the swinging sixties after the libertine actions that occured during this time. It was the era that moved on from the rationing which took place during much of the 50s. It was also time for the British economy to regain strength after the Second World War.

During the 60s there was a huge influx of Rock and Roll, beat and pop music from British bands, known in North America as the 'British Invasion'. Bands such as the Rolling Stones and the Beatles became popular in countries such as Australia, America and Canada.

Derbyshire bands such as The Jetts, The Rapids and The Imps were all playing during this music boom.

Football was also popular in the 1960s. In 1967 the legendary Brian Clough became manager of Derby County Football Club and in 1969 the club were promoted to the First Division. The year before, Ashbourne played host to the 1966 German World Cup team before they moved to Hertfordshire for the final, in which the England football team won 4-2.

For young people following fashion became very important. Flowers and Flares were at the height of fashion in the 60s as people wanted to show how in touch they were with nature. Complaints were made in Derby because of the lack of fashionable clothing available in local shops.

East Midlands Airport at Castle Donington was scheduled to open on April 1, 1965, but snow in early March put work behind and, in the days leading up to the opening, a vital piece of machinery broke down.

Fortunately, most of the required work was completed by mid-afternoon on the day in question but a licence to commence daylight flying only was issued; an accident with the runway lighting meant no night flights for the time being.

Foreign travel was becoming the norm for many Derbyshire families.
