1960s: Kennedy visits sister's grave
In the winter of 1964, Robert 'Bobby' Kennedy, the U.S. Attorney General, and brother of the late President Kennedy came to Derbyshire to visit the grave of his sister, Kathleen.
Accompanied by his wife, the Duchess of Devonshire, and Lady Sophia Cavendish, Mr Kennedy laid a bunch of daffodils, tulips and lilies at the graveside in Edensor churchyard.
His sister, who died aged 28 in an air crash in France in 1948, was the widow of William Cavendish, the Marquis of Hartington and elder brother of the Duke of Devonshire.
The Derby Evening Telegraph of February 1, 1964, reported the event, saying that it was only in June of the previous year that the late President Kennedy carried out a similar homage to his sister's last resting place in Derbyshire. He was assassinated five months later in Dallas, Texas.
Tragedy has dogged the Kennedy family. Like his brother, John, Robert too was assassinated. He was shot in June, 1968, in a Los Angeles hotel, by a Palastinian Arab, Sirhan Sirhan, soon after claiming victory in the crucial California Primary during his campaign to become the next president of the United States.
