Albany Road, Derby - What's in a name?
ALBANY ROAD is one of the many Derby thoroughfares named after a person. It runs between Kingsway and Uttoxeter New Road in the suburban district of Derby blessed with the rather incongruous name California, which is little used for everyday purposes.
The road came into existence in 1895 and was named in honour of His Royal Highness Prince Leopold (1853-1884), a son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and the fourth brother of King Edward VII. He was given the title 1st Duke of Albany in 1881.
