Ashcroft Close, Alvaston - What's in a name?
ASHCROFT CLOSE in Alvaston is one of many Derby thoroughfares named after a person, in some cases for reasons which remain entirely obscure.
Developers sometimes opted to honour people 'in the news' at the time the road was named, or in some instances chose members of their own family. It was also quite common to simply think of a theme, especially for housing estates, and to name all the roads appropriately. Hence the proliferation of estates bestowed with the names of poets, country houses, rivers, villages etc etc. The scope is limitless!
Ashcroft Close was pitched in 1952 and named after the English actress Dame Peggy Ashcroft (1907-1991). Since she was created a a CBE in 1951 this seems like a classic case of 'in the news' naming, for Peggy Ashcroft had no specific links to Derby.
