A 1954 advertisement for Austin Hodgkinsons - by then they had been established in Derby for 164 years

Austin Hodgkinson and Co. Ltd. - who came to be informally known as Austin Hodgkinsons - were a high-class provisions merchants of the old style.

They were established in 1790 in the reign of George III, and were still dispensing groceries, wines and provisions to the good folk of Derby into the second half of the twentieth century, before the new shopping experience known as the 'supermarket' finally sounded its death knell.

Shopping at Austin Hodgkinsons was a timeless, pleasant and even sensual experience, and ironically the current trend for the return of the 'high-class deli' to the British high street mirrors exactly the sort of service and products which the sadly-demised Derby firm were offering decades ago.

Were the firm to be magically resurrected today in its original incarnation it would undoubtedly be a striking succes - the sort of place Nigella Lawson or Jamie Oliver would be hard-pressed to resist!
