Alfred Baker - Ilkeston-born Arsenal and England Footballer

Ilkeston-born Alf Baker (1898-1955) in his Arsenal strip. He played one game for England.

ALFRED BAKER was one of the select group of men born in Derbyshire to play football for England. His main position was right-back, but he had started as an outside-left and was known for his ability to slot in anywhere. While with Arsenal he even played in goal in an emergency.

He was born in Ilkeston on 27 April 1898 and first made his mark in Ilkeston schoolboy football. After starting his working life as a miner he became a professional footballer - from 1919-30 he made a remarkable 310 League appearances for Arsenal and gained an FA Cup winners medal with them in 1930.

Before making the grade with the Gunners he had played for Long Eaton FC and Eastwood Rangers, and had guested for Chesterfield, Crystal Palace and Huddersfield Town.

His sole appearance for England was against Wales in November 1927. Alf Baker died in London on 1 April 1955, aged only 56.
