Harry Bedford (1899-1976) - England and Derby County footballer

HENRY 'HARRY' BEDFORD was one of a select group of Derbyshire-born men to play football for England.

He was born in Calow, near Chesterfield, on 15 October 1899. A high-scoring centre-forward, and later inside-right, he began his first-class football career with Nottingham Forest in 1919. He subsequently played for Blackpool before joining Derby County in September 1925. By the time he left Derby for Newcastle United in December 1930 he had played 218 games for the Rams and scored 152 goals.

After leaving Newcastle he played for Sunderland, Bradford and Chesterfield, where he wound up his League career in 1933/34. Overall he had played 486 League games and scored 308 goals, a prolific return.

In 1934 he became player-coach of Heanor Town and was their manager from March 1955 to May 1956. He played just twice for England (1923-24).

He settled in Derby and was for a time masseur to Derbyshire County Cricket Club. He also served in the Rolls Royce Fire Service from 1941-64. Harry Bedford died in Derby on 24 January 1976, aged 76.
