Joseph Beresford - Chesterfield-born England Footballer
JOSEPH BERESFORD was one of a select group of Derbyshire-born men to play football for England. He creeps into the record books via his one full cap which was won in 1934 while he was at Aston Villa. He was an inside-forward.
Joe Beresford was born in Chesterfield on 26 February 1906. He began his first-class football career with Mansfield Town in 1926 and subsequently served Aston Villa, Preston North End and Swansea Town.
In a career spanning 1926 to 1937 he played 313 League games and scored 77 goals. Over 200 of his appearances were for Aston Villa. He died in 1978, aged 72. He is one of a number of England players of whom no known photograph exists in the official Football Associaton archive - why not add one to this article if you can help?
