Bowled over by fantastic turn-out for the Aussies
It is interesting to look back at this fascinating view of Derbyshire County cricket ground in 1948. It was just three years after the end of the Second World War, yet you would think nothing had ever happened. The ground was packed with fans who had turned out to see a touring Australian team play.
The Grandstand Hotel can be seen to the right with the stand at the side of it.
In 1948 the captain was E J Gothard and, in those days, the team played at five grounds across the county – the county ground in Derby; Queen’s Park, Chesterfield; Rutland Recreation Ground, Ilkeston; Park Road, Buxton; and the Ind Coope Ground, Burton. The team travelled as far afield as Taunton, Portsmouth, Scarborough and Manchester for away games.
The year’s match records appear to have been fairly average. Out of 27 first class matches played, Derbyshire won 11, lost seven and drew nine, despite having some excellent players.
The team included George Pope, who had been selected for the MCC tour to India in 1939-40, which had been cancelled due to the war, and Charlie Elliott of Derbyshire who the previous year scored 215 against Nottinghamshire in exactly six hours.
