John Henry Brown - Derbyshire Miner and England Footballer
JOHN HENRY 'JACK' BROWN was one of a select group of Derbyshire-born men who played football for England. He was a goalkeeper, and in his six games for his country (1927-29) he let in 7 goals.
Jack Brown was born in the Derbyshire mining community of Hodthorpe, near Worksop, on 19 March 1899. He became a collier and played non-League football for his local club Worksop Town. After putting in a marvellous display in a Cup-Tie in which Worksop sensationally forced a draw at Tottenham Hotspur, Brown was signed by Sheffield Wednesday in 1923 and became a regular fixture there. He made 465 League appearances for the Owls before he was transferred to Hartlepools United in 1937.
He played only one game for Hartlepool, so in his overall career spanning 1923 to 1937 he made 466 League appearances. Jack Brown died on 10 April 1962, aged 63, and is quite possibly the most famous person born in Hodthorpe! The official England football archive has no photograph of him -if you know of one, why not add it to this article?
