Brunswick Inn, Railway Terrace - then and now
So many of Derby’s historic buildings have been left to rot and finally be demolished that it makes these pictures especially heartening.
The Brunswick Inn opened in 1842 as the first purpose-built inn for railway employees. It remained in the ownership of the railways for 105 years, eventually falling into disrepair. Then, in 1976, Derbyshire Historic Trust acquired the inn and adjacent cottages and, after extensive renovation, funded by the Trust and the Derby Civic Society, the Brunswick reopened in 1987.
Four years later, new owner Trevor Harris established a brewery on the premises and, in 2001, the pub was voted UK Beer Pub of the Year.
The date of the earlier picture is unclear but the car on the right seems to date it at some time in the late 60s or early 1970s.
