Bryce, Douglas - Scientist who brought relief to millions
Known to his friends as Max, his achievements as a scientist included the development of E45 cream, which reduces irritation caused by dry skin.
He also worked in the development of Freece Toothpaste, popular in the 1960s, and wrote several papers for chemistry periodicals.
He had been president of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists in the 1980s and a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry for 50 years.Mr Bryce ’s daughter Marian said her father, of Tamworth Road, Long Eaton, had been highly respected by fellow chemists and he travelled all over the world to deliver speeches.
Said Marian “When people asked why he had so many children, he joked he wanted to raise the IQ of the British population.”
His love of wildlife and the outdoors led him to play a role in preserving Derbyshire’s countryside. He was a garden steward at Kedleston Hall; a committee member of Long Eaton Natural History Society and a tree warden for Erewash Borough Council.
Mr Bryce was also a railway enthusiast and involved in running the miniature railway at Butterley until his death.
He was given a woodland burial on 7 January, 2008 at Golden Valley following a service at the chapel of the Midland Railway Centre, Swanwick Junction.
A father-of-nine, he was survived by wife Beryl, sons Wallace, David, Robin and James, and daughters Marian, Lorna, Alison, Rosalind and Helen.
