Derby has lost countless shops over the years, some of which were so liked and trusted that they became household names.

One such was Butler's the Stationers, which sold everything for the office and home study in that not too far distant pre-computer age when personal letters were still hand-written and the clatter of typewriters filled every workplace.

In the first half of the twentieth century it had shop premises in London Road, Derby, but moved to its familiar Iron Gate site in 1937, where it remained until its final closure. The picture here shows the shop interior in August 1950 - Gloy paste, Vanguard stapling machines, and Basildon Bond notepaper and envelopes are some of the extensive stock for sale.
