'I'm a great believer in luck and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it,' former US president Thomas Jefferson once said. Certainly, industry has played a key part in the prosperity of Derbyshire, from the engines of Rolls-Royce and the railways that have kept the wheels of the local economy turning round to the manufacture of fine china and pottery which the county is famous for throughout the world.

And there’s plenty of evidence of the work ethic that drove Jefferson to be successful. In this section, you can read stories of people who dedicated their working lives to one company, others who grafted a living for years in the harsh conditions of mines now long gone, and men and women who even found time for romance in between shifts.
