Over the years countless 'household name' shops in Derby have been lost in the name of progress, now consigned to the 'retail heritage' category of local history.

One such was the Central Educational Co. Ltd., not half as boring as its name might suggest. It sold books, pictures, artists and drawing materials, craftwork items, fine china, and all manner of giftware under the now rare generic heading 'fancy goods'.

In the 1930s it was a large establishment in St. Peter's Street, but moved to smaller premises in St. Peter's Churchyard in the 1960s, before eventually closing down in the early 1990s.

Informally known as the 'Central Ed', it was a popular shop for children stocking up with materials for school.
