Church Broughton - A Cow's Sorry End
The Derby Evening Telegraph has reported thousands of deaths in its time. All have been sad, many tragic, and some bizarre. But the one reported on 13 May 1937 under the headline COW HANGS ITSELF must take some beating:
'A cow became enmeshed in the goal nets on Church Broughton football ground yesterday and hanged itself. The animal, which was owned by Mr. W. Atkins of Old Hall Farm, Church Broughton, was found lying dead by a farm labourer.'
They say 'no news is good news', but in this case 'no moos was bad news'.
