ERNEST ELLIS CLARK (1869-1932) was a painter and designer considered one of the most outstanding students of Derby School of Art, which he first attended as an evening industrial student in 1892.

He was born in Derby in 1869 and became a painter at the Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Company, where he stayed until 1902. He left the china works to become a full-time crafts instructor at the School of Art in Green Lane.

Between 1899 and 1904 he won seven medals in the National Competition for schools of art. From 1914-1918 he served as a gunner in the Royal Field Artillery.

He was a member of Derby Sketching Club and produced many attractive paintings. He liked particularly to paint townscapes and people, and often depicted scenes from Derby in his pictures.

He also did some writing, and in 1904 he published A Handbook of Plant Forms for Students of Design.

He was employed at Green Lane from 1902-32 and lived at Spondon, near Derby.

Ernest Clark is one of many talented Derbyshire artists whose names no longer ring with the clarity they once did, although his works sometimes come up in the auction rooms, and can be purchased at quite reasonable prices.

He died in Derby in 1932, aged 63.
