Cowan, Samuel - Chesterfield-born England Football International
SAMUEL 'SAM' COWAN was one of a select group of Derbyshire-born men to play football for England. He was a 'centre-half' in the days when that position was a playmaking central-midfield role often termed the 'pivot'.
He was born in Chesterfield on 10 May 1901 and began his first-class football career with Doncaster Rovers in 1923. In 1924 he was signed by Manchester City and became a star there, playing 369 League games and scoring 19 goals. He was subsequently transferred to Bradford City and finished his career in 1937 - his overall record was 474 League games and 33 goals.
Cowan played three times for England (1926-31) and was briefly manager of Manchester City (1946-47). He moved to Brighton when his football days ended and opened a physiotherapy practice there. He was masseur to Sussex County Cricket Club, and it was through his cricket contacts that his untimely death was effectively brought about.
He agreed to referee a football match at Haywards Heath which was being held as a benefit for the Sussex wicketkeeper Jim Parks. But he suffered a fatal heart attack during the game - on 4 October 1964 - and died aged 63.
