JOHN DAVIES 'JACK' COX was one of a select group of Derbyshire-born men to play football for England. He was capped just once, against Ireland in March 1892.

He was born in Spondon in 1870 and began playing football for the village side while still at school. His form at half-back brought him to the notice of Long Eaton Rangers, then one of the leading Midlands clubs and a team which appeared in the FA Cup competition.

Derby County soon heard about the local lad and he signed for the Rams in 1891. He acquired the nickname the 'Squire of Spondon' and stayed until 1899, making 238 appearances and scoring 7 goals.

Thereafter he emigrated to Canada, where he went into business as a painter and decorator, although he returned to England to fight in World War One.

Jack Cox died in Toronto in June 1957, aged 77.
