GEORGE HENRY DAVIS was one of a select group of Derbyshire-born men to play football for England. He won both of his two caps in 1904 in games against Wales and Ireland while a Derby County player. He was a left-winger.
George Davis was born in Alfreton on 5 June 1881. His first football club was Alfreton Town, who he joined in 1896 when only fifteen years of age. He was spotted by Derby County and signed for the Rams in December 1899. He stayed until 1908/09, clocking up 155 appearances and 29 goals.
Still only 26, he rejoined Alfreton Town and became landlord of the Plough Inn at Alfreton. He was also at one time a potato merchant - and an England trialist at lacrosse! His entrepreneurial spirit led him to consider oportunities abroad, and in 1912 he and his wife sailed for Canada to begin a new life.
Still young enough to play football, he joined Calgary Hillhurst, and in 1922, aged 40, won a Canadian Cup winners' medal with them. He later coached a Manitoba team, before entering the hotel business and making a considerable fortune.
He remained in Canada until the 1950s, but returned to England in retirement and settled in the Nottingham area. He died in Wimbledon on 28 April 1969, aged 87.
