WHILE your are still in the festive spirit, take a trip down memory lane and see if you can remember attending any of the children’s parties held at the Derby Cables sports and social club, on Alfreton Road.

Perhaps you attended one of the events held in the old wooden sports pavilion, built in 1933 by volunteers to serve the needs of the club.

Or, maybe, you went to a Christmas party held in the super new sports and social clubhouse, which opened in June 1958, replacing the old building.

For many years, contributor Tony Bowler was a member of the committee which organised the Christmas parties.

He writes: “Most ran to perfection with good entertainment and a Father Christmas, but there was always the odd rascal determined to spoil it for others.

“Take a close look at the photographs. The one above was taken in 1953 at the old club; the one below was taken at the new sports centre. If anyone can oblige me with the date, I would be most grateful.

“I know some of the children pictured went on to work at the Derby Cables factory.”

If you recognise yourself and have any tales to tell about the parties or working at Derby Cables, please contact us at Bygones. See the column for how to get in touch.
