Although she had made a few visits to the county previously, Tuesday February 20, 1985, marked the first major visit to Derby by Diana, Princess of Wales.

Freezing temperatures failed to spoil the day as the Princess visited the Normanton Road annex of the Derby College of Further Education.

Waiting outside the building to present a posy was eight-year-old Claire Longdon, granddaughter of the Mayor of Derby, Councillor Ron Longdon. In typical no-nonsense style, the Princess immediately swooped and bustled the little girl inside the building to hand over the flowers as she was so concerned about the youngster standing in the cold a moment more than necessary.

Inside, the Princess took a great interest in the work of students before moving on to visit Wetherby Day Centre, on Gosforth Road, and the nearby Community Task Force Unit.
