THE article about the history of the Derby Serenaders Band (January 22) prompted Eric Richards to send in this photograph. It was actually taken by an Evening Telegraph reporter in 1974.

Eric, of Belper, writes: “The photo depicts the Serenaders and supporters about to depart on the band’s first adventure into European competition. They emerged victorious from the contest which involved some 20 European countries.

In the middle row, in the dark jacket with a hand on his shoulder, is band manager Maurice Ward.

Kneeling down at the front, second from the right, is David Ward, the author of the January 22 story in Bygones.

Far right is Ken Hallam, a founder member of the band and alonside him, third from the right, is Pete Westley, then Alf Gilbert and Beryl Oldham, all long-serving members.”
