Derby cinemas in the 40s, 50s, 60s.
I have been casting my mind back and have been trying to think of the cinemas in Derby in the above eras. I have come up with 17 - I can’t be sure if I have the correct names but I expect readers will put that right.
The ODEON St Peters St. The REGAL East St. There were 4 on London Rd. The GAUMONT The Spot London Rd. I think it was the FORUM near Midland Rd, which showed lots of foreign films.
The COLISEUM near Traffic St. The RITZ atAlvaston, BROADWAY at Allenton, the CAVENDISH - which was naturally at The Cavendish - and The NORMANTON on Dairyhouse Rd. The PICTURE HOUSE Babbington Lane, which had a strange wooden panelled foyer and later was knocked down and the first Primark store opened there.
The ALEXANDRA Normanton Rd., BLACK PRINCE rear of Ranbys - the first to show Cinemascope films I think . The POPULAR, Mill St Ashbourne Rd., always known as 'The Pop', and I think there was another called the COSMO, possibly on Upper Boundary Rd.
Then there was the MAJESTIC onChaddesden Park Rd., and one on the main Nottingham Rd Chaddesden, I think it was called the ESSOLDO. And finally one in Sitwell St Spondon - I cannot remember its name.
