Ecclesbourne Valley Railway :Ravenstor
Ravenstor - a real heritage.
Ravenstor is the most northerly place on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway. This location about half a mile north of Wirksworth station yard is approached by rail on a continuous incline of 1 in 30; this is a very steep gradient in railway terms and very rarely found. This section of track was never a passenger carrying line but served to allow quarried limestone to be conveyed by standard gauge railway wagons from a 'concentration point' fed by lesser lines and conveyors from different quarries. They did not all exist concurrently but over the working life of 120 years many were used.
