The Queen is no stranger to Derbyshire, having visited Derbyshire on numerous occasions over the years. Arguably the most important occasion was when the Queen came to confer city status on the town of Derby.

Adoring crowds greeted the monarch as she made her way to the Council House for the ceremony. The event took place on July 28, 1977, just a month after the town had celebrated the Queen's Silver Jubilee.

In July 1997, she officially opened Derby County’s new stadium at Pride Park. It was the first time she had ever opened a football ground.

In November 2003, she again broke new ground by becoming the first reigning monarch to visit Derby Cathedral. She performed the official opening of the new £1.25 million Derby Cathedral Centre which is housed in the former Clulows bookshop, a Grade II listed building at the junction of St Mary’s Gate opposite the cathedral.

The Queen returned to Pride Park in 2002 as part of her Golden Jubilee celebrations. Derbyshire yachtswoman Ellen MacArthur welcomed the Queen and Prince Philip who were then entertained by more than 2,000 performers. A series of cavalcades, each representing a different decade of the Queen’s reign in the life of Derbyshire, passed in front of them. As the Queen left the Royal box, the compere for the day, Buxton-born actor Tim Brooke-Taylor, led a rendition of 'Land of Hope and Glory'.
