Frank Richard Allsop - R.I.P. at Tissington
FRANK RICHARD ALLSOP shares a grave in St. Mary's Churchyard, Tissington, Derbyshire, with his father James Allsop and grandfather Richard Allsop.
This unremarkable statement gains rather more interest on account of the date of his death - 15 April 1912 - for Frank Allsop lost his life in the sinking of the 'Titanic' on that fateful day. This is stated on the gravestone, which many visitors to the churchyard pass by unknowingly. Allsop was a saloon steward on the ill-fated 'unsinkable' vessel, and was 43 when he perished.
Unfortunately it is often erroneously stated - especially on internet websites - that 'James Allsop' of Tissington died in the 'Titanic' disaster - this is merely the result of careless reading of the gravestone inscription. The 'Titanic' victim was most assuredly his son Frank.
Although his body was never recovered his name was added to the memorial at the time his father James died in 1917, hence a further reason for possible confusion, since although Frank died five years before his father his name appears last on the memorial.
Frank's 40-year-old sister Mrs. H. McLaren was also a crew member on the Titanic - a stewardess - but survived the sinking after being rescued from lifeboat 5 after an anxious wait of five hours.
