Derbyshire has had its fair share of colourful and inspiring characters who have made the county their home over the centuries.

Some of them are household names – people like the actor Alan Bates who was born in Derby and became known worldwide as a star of the stage and screen. Others have earned their place in history for their brilliant inventions, Richard Arkwright being just one of these notables who created a spinning machine that was to make him one of the richest men in England when he died.
