Faster, Higher, Stronger - Derbyshire Olympians

Jump to: navigation, search

Of the many achievements to be attained in sport, competing in an Olympic Games is an ambition passionately coveted by athletes and sporting enthusiasts the world over. Beyond that, the winning of an Olympic medal itself is a rare honour indeed, considered one of the most prized in the sporting world. A number of personalities connected to Derbyshire have known what it is to compete in the Olympics, and some have emerged triumphant clutching that precious medal. Here sports historian Peter Seddon casts an eye over the You & Yesterday pages and picks out some articles linked to the Olympic Games and local athletics.

'Citius, Altius, Fortius' - the Latin motto meaning 'Higher, Faster, Stronger' has been the watchword of Olympic achievement since the modern Olympic Games were inaugurated in Athens in 1896.

A number of competitors with links to Derbyshire have had first-hand experience of the Olympic Games. Some were born in the county, others merely resident here. And yet others were linked in more curious ways - like the legendary middle-distance runner Sebastian Coe, who was brought up in Sheffield but did countless of his character-forming training runs in the nearby Derbyshire Peak District.

Some Derbyshire Olympians have been written about on the You & Yesterday website, but more have yet to be covered. The articles listed beow have already been created - just click on any title to read more.
