Footballer Publicans
Many in football have taken advantage of their ‘celebrity’ by entering the licensed trade, some while still playing or managing. Here Peter Seddon - confirmed football 'trivialogist' and author of 'The Little Book of Derby County' - offers a selection of Derby County personalities who were all ‘mine host’ locally at some time or another. Alas, some of the hostelries, like their landlords, stopped serving many years ago. Additions to the list would be welcome.
HARRY MASKREY – THE NEW INN, DERBY
JOHN GOODALL – THE STATION INN, DERBY
STUART McMILLAN – THE NAG’S HEAD, MICKLEOVER
GEORGE DAVIS – THE PLOUGH INN, ALFRETON
TOM CRILLY – THE HILTON ARMS, DERBY
BILLY HUGHES – THE RISING SUN, DERBY
ERIC STEELE – THE HOLLYBUSH INN, BREEDON-ON-THE HILL
GEORGE THORNEWELL – THE WHITE HART, DUFFIELD
KEVIN HECTOR – THE STAFF OF LIFE, TICKNALL
ROGER DAVIES- THE COCK INN, HANBURY
DAVID NISH – THE TURK’S HEAD, DONISTHORPE
DES ANDERSON - THE BLACK DOG, BURTON-ON-TRENT
HARRY LEONARD - THE ALBERT VAULTS, DERBY, & DOUGLAS BAR, NORMANTON, DERBY
