ERNEST ARTHUR HART, known as plain old Ernie Hart, was one of the select group of men born in Derbyshire who played association football for England. An attacking centre-half, he was capped eight times by his country from 1928 to 1934.

Ernie Hart was born in the South Derbyshire village of Overseal on 3 January 1902. He showed great promise in Overseal schoolboy and junior football, and later with a side in Doncaster named Woodlands Wesleyans.

His intelligent performances brought him to the attention of League club scouts, and in September 1920 he signed for Leeds United. Over the next sixteen seasons he became a legend at Elland Road - considered one of the best centre-halves in the game, he amassed 472 appearances for Leeds and scored 15 goals.

From 1936 to 1938 he played for Mansfield Town, then became player manager at Tunbridge Wells. His overall record in League football from 1920 to 1938 was 475 games and 14 goals.

Unlike many men in football, he also made a lasting mark in retirement. With his savings he bought a bus and began a coach business based in Doncaster called the Beehive Bus Company - it prospered and later became Wilfreda Beehive, a luxury coach company still operating from Doncaster and now nationally known.

Like many former footballers born in the early part of the twentieth century, he died far too young. He was aged only 52 when he passed away on 21 July 1954 - arguably the most famous man ever born in Overseal!
