High Street, Ripley - then and now

Jump to: navigation, search

Image:HighStRipley1937.jpg

It's difficult to recognise Ripley High Street in 1937, above, compared with the same road today, below.

On the left of the older picture is the Cock Hotel, with the Red Lion visible at the bottom of the road on the right. The shops on the right include Redferns and Rose and Co, advertising fashion shoes and impregnable footwear for men.

There’s a Hovis sign, presumably above a bakery, and the shop next to Rose’s looks as though it is having a new sign painted.

Can you recognise any of the buildings in the 2008 photograph? Add you comments in the Discussion link above.

Unfortunately the photo from 1937 is of Church St in Ripley and the new photo is of the High St, this is why they look nothing alike. <a href="http://imageshack.us"><img src="churchstripleycb3.jpg" border="0" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us"/></a>
