- History
EDITH MAUDE HULL was born at Hampstead, London, on 16 August 1880 and died in Hazelwood, Derbyshire, on 11 February 1947, at the age of 66.
Her cruciform grave may be found close to the entrance door to St. John's Church in Hazelwood. It gives no clue to her celebrity as a one-time blockbusting author - and few churchgoers passing by the modest memorial have any idea that the local resident it commemorates once rather shocked polite society by the frankness of her colourful prose.
The full story of Edith Maude Hull is told in an extended article in the 'Famous Residents' section of this site. The short entry here is part of the 'GRAVE MATTERS' series of entries aimed at recording 'celebrity' or unusual graves in Derbyshire.
