HARRY JONES was one of the select group of men born in Derbyshire who played association football for England. A steady and reliable left-back, he was capped just once, in England's 4-1 defeat of France in May 1923.

Harry Jones was born in the Derbyshire pit village of Blackwell on 24 May 1891. Like many youngsters in that tough community he took to the then relatively new craze of organised football, playing for the Blackwell Boys Brigade at the age of 11, then for Blackwell Wesley Guild. After starting work as a miner he turned out for the Blackwell Colliery side, then a force to be reckoned with who also boasted the giant goalkeeper Willie 'Fatty' Foulke in their ranks. Like Foulke, Jones was soon spotted by the League scouts, and Nottingham Forest nabbed his signature.

He signed for Forest in 1912 and became a professional footballer. It proved a good move for both club and player, for Jones stayed with Forest until 1923, clocking up 225 League appearances and 7 goals. The Derbyshire man was frequently praised in glowing terms by the Nottingham press - 'absolutely fearless and unexcelled for dash and resolution'......'has no nerves, will face absolutely anything.'

His courage was demonstrated when he suffered a broken leg, but recovered unimpaired to continue his career, at that time rather a rare occurrence after such an injury.

After leaving Forest he joined Sutton Town in 1924 but retired soon thereafter. Harry Jones is one of the few England players whose year of death remains unrecorded in the official archive of the Football Association - if you can complete his record then please enter it here.
