Lilley, Henry Edward - Staveley and England Footballer

Jump to: navigation, search

HENRY EDWARD LILLEY, sometimes referred to as 'Harry', was one of the select group of men born in Derbyshire to play association football for England. He played only one game - at left-back against Wales in Wrexham in March 1892 before only 4,500 spectators - but nevertheless emerged victorious after a comfortable 2-0 win.

Henry Lilley was born in 1872 in the Derbyshire village of Staveley, a mining community which had a strong football team in its late-Victorian heyday and was renowned for producing players good enough to turn professional. Lilley was one such - he played first for Staveley before joining Sheffield United in the early 1890s, a familiar route for other Staveley players, including the England and Sheffield United legend Ernest 'Nudger' Needham.

Lilley made 19 League appearances for Sheffield United between 1892 and 1893, but his top flight football career then seems to have fizzled out. He joined Gainsboriugh Trinity in 1894, but little is known of him thereafter.

Indeed he is one of the least well documented England players of all time. His precise birthdate is not recorded in the Football Association archives, nor do they have the year of his death or a photograph.
