Locomotive of Yesteryear - The 'Derbyshire Yeomanry'
The 'DERBYSHIRE YEOMANRY' was the name given to a London Midland and Scottish express passenger steam locomotive numbered 45509 in the LMS Patriot class. It was designed by Sir Henry Fowler.
The locomotive was one of 52 in the class and was named in honour of the famous regiment of the British Army first raised in Derbyshire in 1794 under the initial title the Derbyshire Corps of Fencible Cavalry.
The locomotive was built at the LMS works in Crewe and completed on 19 August 1932. Engines in the Patriot class were given the nickname 'Baby Scots'.
The 'Derbyshire Yeomanry' proved a sterling and stylish worker up and down the country until it was withdrawn from service on 12 August 1961. It was cut up and disposed of finally on 30 September 1961 at Crewe. All 52 of the Patriot class locomotives were withdrawn between 1960 and 1965 and none have survived to preservation.
