Lounge bar of pub is now a bank
The Tiger Vaults, in Lock-Up Yard, off Derby’s Corn Market, has a long and colourful history, some of which has been told by Winifred Ireland in her article Tiger Vaults gave us a window on the world. Anthony Walker, of Allenton, was also familiar with the pub as a youngster in the 1950s and 60s – as he recalls.
I am writing with reference to Winifred Ireland’s article about growing up at the Tiger Vaults, Derby, in the early 1900s. The second Tiger Vaults that she talks about was actually the lounge bar of the Tiger Vaults which is still there today.
This lounge is now part of the Bank of Scotland on the corner. It used to be accessed from what was the old covered yard and is now the dancing area of the Tiger.
The lounge shut when I was 13 years old and I am now approaching 52. My father worked as a waiter for the couple who ran the Tiger at that time.
Their names were Gwen and Reg Newton and, at their discretion, I was allowed in the lounge and was there the night it closed.
There was also an upstairs function room with a minstrels’ gallery. This room is still there but part of it was taken up by an extension to the owner’s flat.
The present tenant of the Tiger is David Foulk, who has been there since November 1981. When he took over the pub, the kitchen was renovated and the emergency exit from the upstairs function room removed, which is why it is no longer in use.
Mr Foulk has also renovated the old covered yard and put a glass roof on the open yard. The old bottle stores have become an eating area.
It is from the floor of the old bottle stores that you can gain access to the tunnels under the Market Place and the Guildhall, which are included in the popular Derby Ghost Walks.
