Major Ley and his office staff in the 1950s
This excellent photograph of office staff at Ley’s Malleable Castings, taken around 1950, has been sent all the way from the United States by former Derbeian Betty McAlpine.
Betty (nee Woodbridge) grew up in Derby during the war years, living in Portland Street until she was 24.
Now living in New Jersey, she writes: “Major Francis Ley is in the centre of the front row. The lady to his right is Miss Edith Beattie, my boss.
“She played tennis and rode a sit-up-and-beg bicycle. She was also a member of Rosehill Church – a remarkable woman. I am not on the photo as I had a dental appointment that day.”
Do you recognise anyone in the picture? What was the occasion? If you can provide any more information, please add your memories by going to the Discussion link. Betty says if anyone would like the photograph, they can have it.
Joan Gleeson added:
I too have a copy of this picture, together with another one taken at the same time with more male staff on. I appear in the above picture, second from the right on the second row in the dark sweater.
I am Mrs Joan Gleeson nee Illston. I began work there in 1950 as a junior clerk on the "Letter Table". Betty was in the same large office, and we walked home together. I can identify more than half the staff in the photo, but cannot remember what the occasion was.
