Matlock county Junior School

Jump to: navigation, search

I was at Matlock County Junior School in the mid 1960's and have just a few vivid memories of days there. The kindergarten class, as far as I thought and can remember was to the right of the main school building. On visiting the school a couple of years ago, there was a section on the right blocked off with scaffolding etc. but I'm not sure if the building where we had class was still there. Our classroom was large with a black/green board which flipped! There were fairly low level windows all the way around. One winter during break time, I was the little one being pulled along the icy/snowy playground between two friends when I fell and hurt my arm. Not broken, but I did have it in a sling for a while. I vaguely remember the milk bottles, and the canteen for school lunches where the older children would have the responsibility of serving the meal.

I left the school in July 1969, when I was in Class 5 with Miss E. Blunt as teacher. Before leaving I asked her to sign my autograph book. Most other people had been quite creative and written either rhymes or something similar. Miss Blunt's contribution was "Best Wishes. E. Blunt"!!

One bonfire night we had a huge (well to me it was then!) bonfire outside the kindergarten classrooms, but I don't remember staying too long because I think I was overwhelmed by the size and the fire!

My most vivid memory is walking home from school one afternoon, quite a while after everyone else had left - can't remember why. One boy in my class - and I do still remember his name! - came up to me and said "I want you don't I" and promptly thumped me in the mouth. I must have been about 8 or 9 years old. A tooth fell into my hand and I had to have a couple more removed by the dentist - under gas - a few days later.

I lived at the top of the hill on Wellington Street, and when school closed early one day because of heavy snowfalls, I started trudging up the hill, knee deep in snow. However, I had a wonderful, loving daddy who met me on the way and walked me home!

In 2005 I went back to that school and the playground looked much smaller, but the road leading up to the school, where I was hit, was just the same!

Is there anyone else who was in Miss Blunt's class in 1969?
