Memories of Normanton's Austin Estate
I lived on the Austin estate in Normanton from 1938- 1960, we had some wonderful times over those years, roller skating in the streets, particularly in Caxton street where I lived, we used to have friendly snowball fights with our friends in Baxter Square and Dryden Street, all the children played together, regardless of thier ages. All the deliveries were made by horse and cart, the coalman, the co-op cart and even the milk , which would be ladelled from the churn into your jug, there was only one car in the street and it only came out on a Sunday. We used to slide up and down the street when it had frozen and create our own skating rink, we played ice hockey on many occasions in the 40s and 50s.
