Mile Ash Lane, Darley Abbey - then and now

Jump to: navigation, search

In essence, this scene has not changed in half a century, apart from being smartened up.

The row of cottages, pictured left, in Mile Ash Lane, Darley Abbey, in 1954, are still structurally the same but, 50 years on, they have been transformed from a working class terrace into a bijou mews.

The simple bicycle has been replaced by a row of cars. Just one affluent person had a television in 1954 and no-one had a telephone, compared with the plethora of aerials in the 2008 shot.

The road has been resurfaced, new street lamps installed and, no doubt, the sale price being asked today would have made the 1950s’ owners millionaires.
