New fire engine could travel at 60mph

These photographs, showing Derby Borough Fire Brigade’s new fire engine back in the 1950s, were sent into Bygones by Avis Drury, landlady of the Royal Oak, at North End, Wirksworth.

Fitted with 2,000 feet of hose capable of pumping 700 gallons a minute and able to reach a speed of 60mph, the engine was a state-of-the-art machine costing £1,600.

It is being inspected, above, by Councillor W E Ann, chairman of the Fire Brigade Committee. Avis’s father, Fireman Thomas Carter, is on both photos, which were taken outside Drury Street Fire Station.
