Parents bid an anxious farewell to youngsters
Anxious parents are pictured waving goodbye to their children at Derby station on August 19, 1940.
They were being evacuated to South Africa under a government scheme aimed at ensuring the safety of children living in high risk areas during the Second World War.
Many were sent into the countryside but hundreds were shipped across the globe to live with families in far flung parts of the British Empire like Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa.
Some tragically never reached their destination when their ships were torpedoed by U-boats.
- Were you evacuated to one of these countries in August 1940?
