'Ten Goal Payne' - born in Brimington, Derbyshire, he won one England cap

JOSEPH PAYNE was one of the select group of men born in Derbyshire to play association football for England. He is the subject of a full article in the Famous Residents section of You and Yesterday. See Payne, Joe - Ten Goal Payne

This additional short piece acknowledges his one and only appearance for England, at centre-forward in a friendly game away to Finland in 1937. He scored twice in an 8-0 victory.

He is often referred to as 'Ten Goal Payne' on account of his record-breaking feat of scoring 10 goals in a single game when playing for Luton Town against Bristol Rovers on Easter Monday 13 April 1936 at the age of 22. The remarkable full story may be read in the main article.

Joe Payne died on 22 April 1975, aged 61, and is commemorated by a plaque affixed to the outside of the Miner's Arms public house in Brimington Common, adjacent the site of the house, now demolished, where he used to live.
