The Picture the Past website is a joint project set up by Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, with Derby and Nottingham Councils, to display the photographic archives held in their museums and libraries.

The site contains thousands of historic images, with descriptive captions which provide a fascinating, pictorial record of buildings, people, transport and memorable events in the area over a period of more than 150 years.

All the pictures on the Picture the Past website can be ordered as prints. Just go to the site, start exploring and choose the pictures of which you would like your own copies. Go to Picture the Past to find out more.

A book has been published, by Tempus Publishing, to help promote the Picture the Past website. It concentrates solely on images of the city of Derby, its places, faces and moments in history from the early days of photography in the mid-1800s to the 1980s.

The book was written by Darren Holden and Sally Parkin - who also work for Associated Northcliffe Digital, the company behind the youandyesterday website.

They enjoyed choosing 200 of their favourite, unusual images from the electronic archive at the Picture the Past website. Some of the pictures were originally taken by Derby Evening Telegraph photographers.

You can still buy the book through [Amazon]
