Queen Victoria
The royal family obviously enjoyed their stay because in 1852 they slept another night at the Midland Hotel, where they again received a loyal address from the Corporation. Prince Albert and the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) visited Messrs Holmes's Carriage Manufactory in London Road.
Queen Victoria paid her only State visit to Derby in 1891 when she laid the foundation stone of the new Derbyshire Royal Infirmary and knighted the Mayor, Alderman Alfred Seale Haslam. The town was profusely decorated for the occasion.
The bunting was out again six years later to honour the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
