These two photographs were taken 10 years apart – and it’s still raining. They look more like St Swithen’s Day than St George’s Day parades.

Both show the traditional march through the city centre of the Derby and District Boy Scouts’ Association on April 23.

The picture left is of the 145th Breadsall Hilltop group braving the inclement weather on Corporation Street in 1974. Below, a group of cubs appear to be getting a drenching, taking part in the same parade 10 years earlier, in 1964.

The Scout movement adopted St George as its patron saint early on and has been celebrating his day annually ever since. Scouts generally use the occasion to renew their promises.

As well as England, St George is the patron saint of several other countries, including Catalonia (Spain), Portugal, Georgia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina. In England, St George's Day is also our National Day. April 23 is traditionally accepted as the date of St George's death in 303.
