Ripley Market Place - then and now

Crowds gather to watch their menfolk march off to war in 1914, in the picture, above. The location is Ripley Market Place and the Thorn Tree Hotel is on the left – a reminder that bricks and mortar often remain long after the people who housed them have gone. Note the horse and dray making its deliveries.

The Thorn Tree, offering two meals for less than a fiver, is happily little changed and looks in good shape in the up-to-date picture below. Even its windows have been preserved – as has the frontage of the house next door.

But the house opposite and some of the other buildings have gone. Do you remember them?
